چکیده

T he primary aluminium industry is one of the largest industries in the world today. World production exceeded 20 million metric tons in 2001 (IAI, 2002) and production is widespread throughout the world. Aluminium as the pure metal or in alloys is used to make a range of products including aircraft, utensils, scientific and domestic apparatus, electrical conductors, and automotive parts. Aluminium powders are used in paints, explosives, and fireworks. Aluminium is produced by the HallHeroult process, which involves the electrolytic reduction of alumina (Al2O3) in large carbon lined steel vessels called pots. Hundreds of these pots are housed in a ‘‘potroom’’. Pots may be of two types of technology, either Søderberg or prebake, with prebake potrooms the preferred design in modern smelters because of lower levels of emissions. In a pot, alumina is partially dissolved in an electrolyte of molten cryolite (Na3AlF6) at approximately 960 C̊. It is a continuous process that requires large amounts of direct current electrical power to operate the pots (Giga-watt-hours per annum). The older Søderberg process bakes the anode paste in situ in the pot, whereas the prebake process uses baked anodes manufactured in a separate part of the smelter, usually called the anode factory or electrode plant.

Symptoms of the musculoskeletal system and exposure to magnetic fields in an aluminium plant.

OBJECTIVE The study was performed to examine the influence of the exposure to magnetic fields in the potrooms of an electrolysis plant on the occurrence of musculoskeletal symptoms among the employees. The study was performed after much discussion and worry in the aluminium industry about this issue. METHODS A retrospective cohort study was performed at an aluminium plant. The occurrence of m...

Ultrafine Particle (UFP) Exposures in an Aluminium Smelter: Soderberg vs. Prebake Potrooms

The objectives of this work were to evaluate ultrafine particle (UFP) exposures during aluminium smelting in Soderberg and prebake potrooms. Particle concentrations were monitored using the P-Trak 8525 and aerosol particle size distributions were monitored with the electrical low pressure impactor (ELPI). UFP samples were analyzed for chemical composition by transmission electron microscopy (TE...

Biological indicators of exposure to total and respirable aluminium dust fractions in a primary aluminium smelter.

OBJECTIVES The study attempts to define biological indicators of aluminium uptake and excretion in workers exposed to airborne aluminium compounds in a primary aluminium smelter. Also, this study defines the total and respirable aluminium dust fractions in two different potrooms, and correlates their concentrations with biological indicators in this group of workers. METHODS Air was sampled a...

Bronchial responsiveness and work-related asthma in aluminium potroom workers: effect of removal from exposure.

Twelve subjects relocated from aluminium potrooms due to work-related asthma were followed up for 2-27 months (median 23 months). Repeated post-relocation examinations (numbering 3-7, median 6) of methacholine challenge, forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), eosinophil cell count and respiratory symptoms were carried out at regular intervals. At the time of relocation, bronchial hyperr...
